Steam Frame Launches at $1,059 as Valve Makes Its Biggest VR Push in Years
Valve Steps Back Into the Headset Wars
Valve has officially launched the Steam Frame, marking its biggest push into virtual reality hardware since the Valve Index arrived more than seven years ago.
The new wireless headset launched on September 14, 2026, with the 256GB model priced at $1,059 in the United States. A higher-capacity 1TB version raises the price to $1,299, placing both configurations firmly within premium enthusiast territory.
Steam Frame arrives with a pair of wireless controllers and a dedicated 6GHz wireless adapter designed for streaming games from a PC. Every headset also includes Half-Life: Alyx, which Valve has extensively reworked to run directly on the Frame without requiring a gaming PC.
The result is a very different product from the Index that preceded it.
Steam Frame is not simply another PC VR display. Valve has effectively built a wearable SteamOS gaming computer capable of running games independently while retaining the ability to tap into the considerably greater performance of a gaming PC.
More Than Seven Years Separate Valve’s Headsets
Valve's previous headset, the Valve Index, launched on June 28, 2019.
The Index established itself as one of PC VR's most recognizable enthusiast headsets, but its dependence on external base stations, a wired PC connection, and dedicated gaming hardware increasingly contrasted with the standalone approach that transformed the broader VR market.
Steam Frame represents Valve's response.
Rather than modernizing the Index formula, Valve has rebuilt its VR strategy around portability, wireless connectivity, inside-out tracking, standalone computing, and the Steam ecosystem.
The headset uses four monochrome cameras to track its position and controllers without external base stations. Eye tracking enables foveated rendering and foveated streaming, while pancake optics help reduce the physical size of the headset.
Valve has also emphasized weight distribution and comfort after abandoning earlier prototypes that engineers considered too large and bulky.
That redesign eventually became the hardware shipping in 2026.
A SteamOS Gaming PC Is Hiding Inside the Headset
Steam Frame's defining feature may be the computer built into it.
The headset is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform and includes 16GB of LPDDR5X memory. Storage comes in either 256GB or 1TB configurations, with a microSD card slot available for expansion.
Instead of operating solely as an accessory connected to another computer, Steam Frame runs an ARM-based version of SteamOS.
That gives Valve a foundation for running compatible games directly on the headset.
SteamOS, Proton, and FEX compatibility technology allow the Frame to handle software originally designed for different architectures, extending Valve's compatibility work beyond what it established with Steam Deck.
Less demanding conventional PC games can run locally and appear on a virtual display, while compatible VR titles can operate directly on the headset.
More demanding games can instead be rendered by a PC and streamed wirelessly to the Frame.
Valve is effectively combining a standalone VR headset, wireless PC VR system, and wearable Steam gaming device into a single piece of hardware.
Half-Life: Alyx No Longer Needs the Gaming PC
Half-Life: Alyx serves as the clearest demonstration of that strategy.
Valve's acclaimed 2020 VR game is included with every Steam Frame, but the more significant development is what happened underneath it.
Valve ported Half-Life: Alyx to ARM64 and performed extensive rendering and performance optimization work specifically for standalone Steam Frame gameplay.
The updated version supports foveated rendering and depth reprojection, allowing the headset to maintain a smoother experience while operating at lower internal frame rates.
That means one of PC VR's defining games can now run without the high-end Windows gaming PC that was required when it originally launched.
Players can still stream Alyx from a more powerful PC, but they no longer have to.
For Valve, that makes the six-year-old game both a pack-in title and a technical showcase for what Steam Frame is designed to accomplish.
Wireless Streaming Remains One of Frame’s Biggest Weapons
Standalone performance is only half of the equation.
Valve is also targeting PC players who already own powerful gaming hardware by building Steam Frame around low-latency wireless streaming.
The headset includes a dedicated 6GHz wireless adapter, allowing a PC to communicate directly with the Frame rather than relying entirely on a household wireless network.
Eye tracking adds another layer through foveated streaming.
Instead of transmitting every part of an image at identical quality, the system can prioritize the area where the player is looking. That reduces the amount of visual data that must be transmitted while concentrating image quality where the eye is most likely to notice it.
For demanding PC VR games, that approach lets the desktop computer handle the heavy rendering workload while the headset focuses on tracking, display, input, and communication.
It also means Steam Frame is designed to scale alongside the PC connected to it rather than being permanently limited by its mobile processor.
The $1,059 Price Makes Valve’s Ambition Expensive
The largest obstacle is impossible to ignore.
At $1,059 for 256GB and $1,299 for 1TB, Steam Frame enters the market as premium hardware.
The price also arrives without a power supply included in the standard package. Valve sells a compatible USB-C power adapter separately, although other suitable 45W USB-C chargers can be used.
Additional accessories include an Ergonomic Accessories Kit for users seeking further comfort adjustments and replacement hardware options.
The final pricing is higher than Valve originally hoped to achieve.
Rising memory and storage costs affected the company's 2026 hardware plans, contributing to higher prices across products including Steam Frame and Steam Machine.
That leaves Valve attempting to justify the Frame through versatility rather than aggressive pricing.
This is not positioned as the Steam Deck of VR.
It is an enthusiast device built around Valve's vision for where PC gaming, standalone computing, and virtual reality could converge.
Reservations Put the First Wave Behind a Lottery
Buying one also requires more than simply pressing an order button.
Valve opened reservations alongside the September 14 launch and is using a randomized allocation system for the initial supply.
Customers who register before 10:00 a.m. PDT on September 17 will be included in the initial randomization. Selected buyers will receive an opportunity to purchase beginning September 18, while remaining customers will form a waitlist for future inventory.
The system is intended to reduce the advantage of automated purchasing tools and resellers while distributing limited initial inventory more evenly.
Valve previously employed a similar strategy around its 2026 Steam Machine hardware.
For prospective Steam Frame owners, that means September 17 is the important cutoff for getting into the first randomized allocation rather than a traditional first-come, first-served preorder race.
Early Reviews Reveal Both the Promise and the Rough Edges
Steam Frame's launch reviews suggest Valve has succeeded in several of its hardware priorities while leaving substantial room for software improvements.
The headset has drawn praise for its relatively lightweight construction, balanced ergonomics, wireless implementation, inside-out tracking, controller performance, and flexibility between standalone and PC-streamed gaming.
Its 2160-by-2160 LCD panels for each eye use pancake lenses, while supported refresh rates range from 72Hz through 144Hz, with the highest setting treated as experimental.
The experience is considerably more complicated on the software side.
Compatibility remains a moving target, and the Frame's ARM architecture means Valve is leaning heavily on translation and compatibility technology to expand the library of games that can run directly on the headset.
Standalone performance also cannot match a high-end gaming PC, making wireless streaming particularly important for players expecting premium PC VR visuals.
Battery life can become another limitation during demanding standalone use, reinforcing the compromises required to place a capable gaming computer inside a relatively lightweight headset.
Valve appears to be treating those challenges as areas the platform can improve over time, much as Steam Deck expanded its compatibility and capabilities through years of software updates.
Valve Is Building a VR Platform, Not Just Another Headset
Steam Frame arrives at a very different moment for Valve than the Index did in 2019.
Steam Deck demonstrated that the company could successfully combine custom hardware, SteamOS, compatibility layers, and the existing Steam library into a consumer gaming platform.
Steam Frame extends that philosophy into virtual reality.
The Snapdragon processor, ARM version of SteamOS, FEX compatibility technology, wireless PC streaming, eye tracking, and native Half-Life: Alyx port all point toward a product designed to reduce the boundaries between standalone VR and traditional PC gaming.
Valve is also distributing developer kits to studios interested in targeting the hardware, creating the foundation for a larger native ecosystem.
The question is whether enough developers and players will follow.
At more than $1,000, Steam Frame is not making its case through mass-market pricing. Valve is instead betting that enthusiasts will pay for a device capable of operating as a standalone headset, wireless PC VR system, and wearable extension of the Steam library.

Seven years after the Valve Index, Steam Frame represents far more than a routine hardware refresh.
